Getting started with AI test case generation in TestRail

TestRail’s web-based platform offers a simple, easy-to-use interface for test case creation. Generate your first test by following these steps.
Step 1: Set up your TestRail project and configure test case fields
Log in to TestRail to view your dashboard. Click the project dropdown to view a list of available projects. To create a new one, click Add Project and assign it a name.
Once inside your project, click the Add Test Case or Test Suites & Cases button. Select a template for the test case and fill in the requisite details within the test case fields.
Step 2: Import requirements and user stories into TestRail
Define your product requirements or user stories in the Product Requirements field. Be specific and give the AI context to understand the type of test you want to create. Helpful details include:
- Device types: Mobile, desktop, browser, and operating system information

View the list of available tests. You can click on each one to see its name, description, and product requirements. To modify the name or description of a suggested test, click the test name. Select the Edit Requirements option to modify the proposed requirements of a suggested test.
Once you’re comfortable with any changes you’ve made, click Save. Verify that you’ve selected the tests you want to generate. A blue checkmark appears next to the ones you want to create.
Click Generate (#) Test Cases to auto-generate your tests.
Step 5: Establish traceability by linking tests to source requirements
In the final test case overview, you can link tests to specific source requirements for traceability. This feature is in the References field. Click Add to select the appropriate requirement and enter a description.
Step 6: Organize test cases into suites and create test runs
You can organize test cases into test suites, similar to the file structure on a hard drive. To create a test suite, open a project and click Test Suites & Cases > Add Test Suite. Give the test suite a name (and optionally, a description).
TestRail allows you to execute tests individually, by repository, or by using a filter. By default, it runs all tests in the repository unless you choose another option. You can explore and define your test run options in the project by clicking Test Runs & Results.
